Human Nature

Human Nature Triptych | Oil on Canvas This triptych follows the quiet drama of an octopus—an intelligent, adaptive creature—encountering a discarded tin can on the ocean floor. In the first panel, it hovers above the object, cautious and curious. In the second, it begins to interact—tentatively coiling around the can. By the final panel, it has retreated inside, adopting the waste as shelter. What unfolds is more than a study of marine life; it is a metaphor for the broader consequences of human impact on the natural world. The work invites viewers to reflect on the normalisation of pollution, where the remnants of our consumption become not just litter, but environments—habitats formed out of necessity, not choice. The title, Human Nature, poses a quiet question: Is our nature at odds with the natural world? Do we create and discard without thought—or can awareness reshape our legacy? This piece holds a mirror to our relationship with the planet, encouraging not just contemplation, but accountability. Even in the deep quiet of the ocean, our presence is felt. Will we listen? Each panel measures 30 cm by 23 cm. Black wooden St Ives floating frame.
